Dionysos (translated in latin as Bacchus)
son of Zeus and Semele;
god of intoxication, wild nature, fertility and mystery;
inspirer of good times, ritual madness and ecstasy;
accompanied by centaurs, ipotanes, maenads and satyrs;
frequently underestimated to merely be the god of wine.
In ancient Athens two festivals, named Dionysia and Lenaia,
were dedicated to Dionysus. Initiates worshipped him in the
Dionysian Mysteries, which may have been the precursor
of the Eleusinian Mysteries, Orphic Mysteries and Gnosticism.
Also the more recent movement of Christianity, with its
similar traits of resurrection and life after death, may have
some of its early roots in these rituals.
